Choosing the right product for your skin type 1 : oily & acne-prone

Choosing a skincare product suitable for oily or acne-prone skin can be challenging. But if you know what to look out for, the search will become a lot easier.

  1. Choose natural products that are formulated especially for oily or acne-prone skin : although natural ingredients are generally non-irritating when used appropriately, some natural oils and butters can clog pores and cause breakouts, so you may want to avoid products with a high % of ingredients that are considered comedogenic (having a tendency to block pores) :

Comedogenicity (tendency to block pores) Grade
    0~1 : not significant
    2~3 : moderate
    4~5 : significant

    Cocoa butter 4/5
    Coconut oil 4/5
    Unrefined sesame oil 3/5
    Corn oil 3/5
    Unrefined avocado oil 3/5
    Evening primrose oil 3/5
    Soybean oil 3/5
    Peanut oil 2/5
    Unrefined oiive oil 2/5
    Unrefined almond oil 2/5
    Apricot Kernel Oil 2/5

    * Not all people react similarly to all ingredients. This list is intended to be only a guideline, and does not make the claim that these ingredients are detrimental to all skins.

    1. Know you labels : study the label, and try to avoid products that contain a high % of comedogenic ingredients. For example, if coconut oil or cocoa butter is listed as one of the first three ingredients, it's best to try something else. If you are unsure, always ask the distributor or manufacturer for more details or request a sample before purchasing the product. If the % of comedogenic ingredients is low, the formula itself may still be non-comedogenic and safe to use.
    2. Cleanse thoroughly : always cleanse your skin thoroughly before applying your skincare products. We recommend using an oil-free cleanser or a soap-type foam cleanser for oily skin. If you have combination skin, you can also try using the double cleansing method (oil cleansing followed by foam cleansing).
Just because a product includes comedogenic ingredients, it doesn't mean that the entire formula (i.e., the product) will clog pores and cause breakouts. So it's always important to do your research or test the product when in doubt!
